Summer Term Events 2010

Tuesday 27th to Wednesday 28th April – Donation not Discrimination
Two days of events organized by the Students Union LGBT Officer and Committee looking at ban on gay or bisexual men giving blood. The two days will feature a stall, publicity stunt, petition and a talk from NUS LGBT committee.

Michael Causer 19, fresh out of a FE college, was beaten to death on his way home after a night out in Liverpool. Two teenagers kicked and punched him to death because of who he loved, so badly it was nearly impossible for his body to be identified. It took this despicable, inhuman act for the local community and religious groups to realise the effect of their intolerance. Donating blood – an act which takes only 30 minutes, yet is likely to be the most amazing thing you do in your lifetime. So why are we stopping healthy people from donating?

Every year, the National Blood Service (NBS) collect around 2.1 million blood donations, thoroughly testing each one, saving the lives of thousands of people each year. However, there is still a shortage, particularly of the more rare blood types. A shortage which could be filled by gay and bisexual men.
